History

Jiu Jitsu (also called Jujutsu or Jujitsu) is an ancient martial art that reaches back over 1,200 years.
It developed in 8th century Japan, during a period of unrest and civil war when new styles of combat were created for the use in battle against heavily armoured opponents. Complex and highly effective techniques were developed for armed and unarmed combat.

Sakura Kan Jiu Jitsu has its roots in these ancient combat styles - over the centuries many other martial arts evolved from Jiu Jitsu, such as Aikido, Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Sakura Kan's story begins with Soke Sugawara Gesshu, the head of two martial arts systems (one Jiu Jitsu and the other Aikido). His style of Jiu Jitsu was handed down from Sensei to Sensei to the founder of Sakura Kan, James Salter. James opened the first dojo (training hall) in New Plymouth on the 15th of January 1994.
